Rénovation d'une maison individuelle, Bonnevoie, Luxembourg

A contemporary reinterpretation of urban living in the heart of Luxembourg. This 220 sqm renovation project in Bonnevoie represents a thoughtful reinterpretation of an existing urban house, where contemporary comfort and architectural clarity are introduced while respecting the residence’s original character.

Located in one of Luxembourg City’s most established residential districts, the projet seeks to preserve the building’s integration within the neighbourhood’s architectural fabric while introducing a new spatial identity adapted to modern living. The existing street façade is maintained and carefully refurbished, ensuring continuity with the surrounding urban context. This gesture honours the architectural language of the area and reinforces the relationship between the house and the street. In contrast, the garden-side extension adopts a distinctly contemporary and horizontal approach, opening generously to the south.

Full-height glazing allows natural light to penetrate deep into the interior spaces, enhancing the atmosphere and creating a fluid visual connection with the outdoor garden. Internally, the renovation focuses on reorganising circulation, clarifying volumes, and improving spatial proportion. The ground floor is reconfigured to maximise openness and flexibility, creating a bright living area where kitchen, dining and lounge spaces interact seamlessly.

Materials play a key role in creating a calm and coherent domestic environment: natural wood, mineral surfaces and a restrained palette contribute to a warm yet minimal interior identity. On the upper levels, the renovation enhances privacy and comfort through improved layouts, integrated storage solutions and optimised natural light. Window placements, openings and interior detailing have been refined to preserve the home’s original charm while elevating its architectural qualities.

Energy performance is also significantly upgraded through improved insulation, contemporary glazing and efficient technical systems, ensuring that the renovated house meets today’s standards of sustainability and long-term durability.

The projet achieves a careful balance between heritage and modernity. By preserving the façade and structural character where appropriate, the renovation pays respect to the existing architecture. Simultaneously, the new extension, interiors and material choices express Kleinmuller Architects’ contemporary approach to residential design: clear lines, functional simplicity, and timeless elegance.

Ultimately, this renovation transforms the house into a refined, comfortable and luminous home that meets the expectations of contemporary family life while remaining firmly rooted in its urban environment. It demonstrates the studio’s expertise in combining existing architecture with new interventions to create spaces that feel both authentic and renewed.
